Marshfield’s volleyball team beat the Hood River Valley Eagles Saturday earning a spot in the state tournament in Portland t Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11 and 12.
The Pirates prepared themselves and were optimistic going into the game.
“We expected it [to win], but I’m really really excited. We’ve been working so hard this week,” junior Alicia
Hatzel said.
MHS won in three games,25-14, 28-26 and 25-23, though the Eagles challenged the Pirates.
“Hood River played a really good game. They were really scrappy. It was nice to win it in three games,” head coach Tammie Montiel said.
The second game was especially intense when the teams were tied 24—24. However, junior Emily Moe alleviated the pressure when she blocked a pass and took the lead.
The team hopes to improve on their sixth place finish at state from a year ago in this weekend’s tournament at Liberty High School.
“Our goal is to get into the final four and I don’t expect anything less from our team this year,” Moe said.
Hopes are high from the school and community as well.
“They have a wonderful opportunity to win it all, in my opinion,” Principal Greg Mulkey said.
