Ryan and Shawna Mahaffy have opened their ranch to the public every fall season since 2004 and this year was no different. Many Marshfield students have visited Mahaffy Ranch this year and continued their traditions at a time when many traditions have been interrupted. Senior Mirabella Matthews is one of these individuals.

“My family and I have been going to the pumpkin patch as far back as I can remember,” Matthews said. “It feels great being able to continue this tradition with my family and friends.”

Junior Emma Schaefer also goes to Mahaffy Ranch every year with her family and friends.

“I was glad to hear it was gonna be open. It was good to have something normal still going on,” Shaefer said.

Aside from hunting for the perfect pumpkin in the field, Mahaffy ranch has a unique atmosphere to ring in fall season. Pony rides are usually available, as well as a corn maze, and horse-drawn hayride around the entire property. There is a hay maze for kids, and a petting zoo with farm animals for kids to see up close, and a country store complete with jugs of fresh apple cider, hot donuts, and local jams and honey available for purchase.

“My favorite part that the pumpkin patch had to offer is the hayride,” Matthews said. “I also always race my little sister through the corn maze and see who can get out first. You also can’t forget about the delicious apple cider slushie with caramel drizzle.”
