On Jan. 6, avid Trump supporters and other conservative, right-wing groups breached and stormed the U.S. Capitol and destroyed thousands of dollars worth of property. They even threatened the lives of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Vice President Mike Pence, who was in charge of leading the certification of electoral votes that day.
Since March 2020, the hallways at Marshfield High School have been quieter than normal, as the dangers of a new virus have students participating in comprehensive distance learning (CDL) instead of crowding the hallways and classrooms
Empty classrooms, bells echoing through deserted hallways and vacant parking lots. This has been the scene for schools around America since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020. Since then, reopening guidelines with the Oregon Department of Education have shifted at least twice. While students and staff wait eagerly to return, school administration is in charge of making the tough decisions on when to return to in-person instruction and how to do so safely.
Graduation gowns and tassels in place, 2020 Marshfield High School graduates loaded into their cars with family and friends to drive to a stage and pick up their diploma. The only people there to cheer them on was their family. There was no traditional tossing of caps in the air.
Ryan and Shawna Mahaffy have opened their ranch to the public every fall season since 2004 and this year was no different. Many Marshfield students have visited Mahaffy Ranch this year and continued their traditions at a time when many traditions have been interrupted. Senior Mirabella Matthews is one of these individuals.

Marshfield High School’s long-time rival has been the North Bend Bulldogs. The annual Pirate vs Bulldog rivalry game draws spectators from around the community. However, sporting restrictions with COVID-19 has changed the nature of games for the 2020-2021 school year.
In a small town like Coos Bay that is void of many typical teenage hotspots, local teenagers have to find their own hang-out spots and places to go when they have been in quarantine too long. One popular place in this area for young people to go has become the Eastside Boat Ramp, commonly known by local boaters but now the spot for local teens to seek refuge.

The Speech and Debate team has entered their qualifying tournament season and one student already accomplished the goal of making it to the national tournament.
Last weekend, senior Rachel Simon qualified for the tournament in congressional debate. It will take place on June 18 in Birmingham, Ala.

Sports for Marshfield High School have been a little different this year. Fall sports, such as football and volleyball, will be starting mid-February. Spring sports will be starting around the end of March. beginning of April. Winter/spring sports, like swimming, should be starting in May and last until the end of the school year.
The sports world has seen vast changes within the last few months due to COVID-19. With large corporations such as the NBA and NFL using safety precautions such as only operating their stadiums at limited capacity,
Undefeated as of December 9th, 2020, the Marshfield High School boys soccer team is on a tear and has not let up a single game so far.
Kobe Bean Bryant, Mr. 81, The Dagger, The Black Mamba. A man with not only skill on the basketball court, but off the court as well, as a father, husband, coach and more.
Last Tuesday, Marshfield boys varsity soccer played their sixth Far West League game. Marshfield fell to the visiting Brookings-Harbor Bruins with a final score of 4-0. Head soccer coach Drew Jones said he is pleased with how his team performed.
“We had at least 40 minutes where we played, even with the best team in our league,” Jones said. “We had a 13-man roster and given everything that happened, we definitely played as well as we could.”
This is an improvement over how Marshfield played against Brookings-Harbor earlier this season in their 7-1 loss to the Bruins.

Standardized tests were created to give all students a universal test with similar conditions in order to accurately gauge a student’s academic abilities. However, many believe that the same test that was created with fairness being a top priority can no longer hold that title.

According to each state and school district in the United States, students should have the opportunity to be separated by ability so that they can have the opportunity to learn based on their academic level.
