In the last couple of years, there has been a major increase of clothing from former decades coming back. Everything from scrunchies to high waisted pants are resurfacing in the world of fashion.
Junior Paige Hinkel has noticed the style change and taken to it herself. Hinkel says that she has noticed fashion from about 40 years ago making a comeback.
“I have seen the 80s and 90s mostly through jean jackets, bomber jackets and scrunchies,” Hinkel said. “I have seen a lot of scrunchies.”
Marshfield English teacher Ashley Caballero has also seen a rise in older-style clothing like bell bottoms, psychedelic colors and Levi’s jeans, as well as other things.
“I kind of think that the 90s were back for a while but now that is kind of phasing out,” Caballero said. “Now we are kind of leading in an 80s and 70s combination style to where it is not directly one decade so it’s kind of just like this big mix of multiple decades.”
Hinkel said she gets the majority of her fashion ideas from social media.
“I get most of my fashion inspiration from Pinterest,” Hinkel said. “I have a board of all of the outfits that I like, and most of them are from the 80s and 90s.”
Hinkel says that she first became interested in fashion when she originally downloaded social media apps.
“I think I began dressing like this when I became more active on social media, so at the beginning of high school,” Hinkel said. “I began to see more pictures and videos of people that I admire dressing the way that I liked.”
Senior Summer McDonald has also acquired a flare for fashion from the past. According to McDonald, social media is doing it’s part in recycling styles.
“I feel like right now is a time when a lot of different types of time periods are coming together,” McDonald said. “Social media is a big form of people spreading the new fashion and older things.”
According to Hinkel, history is repeating itself in terms of fashion.
“Fashion recycles; once an era of fashion goes by and people kind of forget about it, it tends to recycle itself into the next generation,” Hinkel said.
Caballero recalls her parents wearing the same styles that she sees kids in her classroom wearing now.
“It is funny to see a lot of the kids now dressing like how my generation’s parents dressed,” Caballero said. “I see the way that my parents dressed when they were young and then it’s almost identical to the classrooms now.”
When looking back at old photos, McDonald feels like they have begun to look modern because so many of the styles have come back.
“Looking back at old family photos, they almost look modern because of how much we have gone back to old things,” McDonald said.
Of the styles that have come back, McDonald says that her favorites are the more weird and unique things.
“High-waisted jeans, bright colors and weird patterns are my favorite things that have come back,” McDonald said. “Fun, wacky stuff.”
For the most part, Caballero says that she likes the styles that have come back and how this generation has customized them and made them their own, with the exception of fanny packs.
“One thing that I just can’t stand is the fanny packs. I think that they should stay in their own decade,” Caballero said. “With every decade you have the goods and the bads.”
Hinkel said she is looking forward to seeing what trends from this decade will be recycled in the future, if any.
“I think that what’s interesting is that in 30 years, the things that are modern now are going to be what is vintage then,” Hinkel said. “It is going to be interesting to see what trends will be recycled.”
