Wrapping Christmas up with great gifts

There’s no doubt that some people love Christmas, there are many reasons for that including traditions, food, movies, the snow, family gatherings, music, good times, and of course the favorite, receiving gifts. Some reasons may be that the gift is sentimental, meaningful, or has been wanted for a long time. Some of the favorite gifts for teens this year are headphones, gaming equipment, bags like totes or for some a purse, simple gold/silver jewelry, candles, skin care, makeup, shoes like mini Uggs or Nike’s, water bottles–especially Stanleys or Hydro Flask. Other favorite gifts include those that are usable.

“Money because then I can choose something I know I’ll use.” said Harper Godley, a Marshfield High School student.

Teens would still love getting gifts, but an upside of money is that you can do what you want with it. Instead of having a trinket collecting dust on a shelf, money can be used toward needs or wants. Another reason money might be wanted instead of a gift may be that family or friends don’t know what’s wanted.

“Probably gift cards so I can go and pick out what I want to get,” said Miranda Jester, MHS student.

Another gift someone would like to receive could be a dream gift. For some, a dream gift could be small and meaningful while others might want something bigger that might not be as meaningful.

“I would love to get a truck,” said Jester.

The gifts that people usually end up really wanting are gifts that either mean something to them, maybe go along with a recent trend, or could even be a cool vintage item.

“My dream gift would be a pit bull,” said MHS student Dannika Shibles.

Just like there are favorite gifts every year there are also gifts that people usually don’t want–the boring gifts. Those items usually include socks, school supplies, or maybe even clothing. Some of the most boring gifts could be a sweater, a mug, or maybe lotion.

Clothes are usually a controversial gift, unless it’s from a parent or someone aware of sizing. They often get exchanged, although some might enjoy clothes  for reasons like keeping up with trends.

“Whoever gets them [clothes] for me doesn’t know what I like to wear,” said Jester.

Some people may receive gifts that may not necessarily be unexciting, but may be awkward or even embarrassing–things that are silly, but meaningful. For example, embarrassing gifts might be something along the lines of deodorant or underwear.

“A coffee mug with an initial on it,” said MHS student Dannika Shibles, when thinking of a boring gift.

In the end every year there will always be liked and disliked gifts. People are usually grateful for what they get no matter what, although it’s nice to receive something you’ve been wanting for a while. The best thing to do might just be to guess what the person wants and hope for the best.
