Sean John Combs, also known as P Diddy or Puff Daddy, is currently in jail due to over two dozen lawsuits regarding racketeering and sex trafficking. For many, this is the fall of an icon, who has been in the music entertainment scene since the 1990’s, as a rapper, record producer, actor, fashion designer, and songwriter.
The downfall of Combs came when he was exposed for having huge parties where other celebrities have allegedly engaged in questionable behavior. The parties, otherwise known as Diddy parties, or freak offs, were often a symbol of celebrity status, as only the most exclusive celebrities were invited.
When given an invitation to one of these parties, Combs had the guests sign a nondisclosure agreement stating they will not video tape, take pictures, or reveal anything about Diddy, the partygoers, his business, or his family. Recently, it has come to light that these parties crossed boundaries into the areas of sex trafficking, illegal drug use, and nonconsensual sexual acts.
As with the fall to any celebrity that is admired, discovery of his questionable parties has led to much speculation in the media. It’s not uncommon to see memes, comedy skits, or likewise directed toward Combs now that light has been shed on his illegal behavior.
“I think Diddy did do all the things that he is being accused of,” said Marshfield High School senior Kaylei Olmedo. “He’s a millionaire with too much time on his hands.”
Kim Porter, who was Combs ex-partner and the father of his four children, is the reason that Combs’ parties finally became public knowledge. Porter, who died of pneumonia in 2018, is featured in a book titled “Kim’s Lost Words,” which was published posthumously in 2024. This book is considered a memoir, but it was not written by Porter. It was written by an investigative journalist named Jamal Millwood, who claims to have had notes and documents from Porter, which was pieced together with other information to reveal the story that shook the nation.
In the book, Porter supposedly calls Combs a wolf in sheep’s clothing, a Devil, and much more. It also takes the reader behind the scenes of one of the outlandish parties, complete with drug use, and eventually ending in domestic violence. Book aside, Combs is also alleged to have threatened people with firearms, stalking, physical abuse, death threats, lacing alcohol, sexual assault, drug abuse, domestic abuse, racketeering, and murder. There are also questions regarding his involvement in Porter’s untimely death.
Today, Combs is in jail and has since made multiple pleas for freedom and to be released. Currently, his court hearing date is set for May 2025, and while he waits it out behind bars, the entire nation is waiting to see the outcome.
“I think he’s going to kill himself,” says MHS senior Ian Hammond.
For Combs fans, they are waiting on the edge of their seats to see what will happen to him, much like watching a reality TV show.
“I think he’s gonna die,” MHS senior Cece Cox also believes. “Either someone’s gonna kill him he’s gonna kill himself–that, or he’s gonna fake his death, disappear.”
