    Volleyball earns trip to state

Last Saturday, Marshfield volleyball played the first round of the OSAA 4A volleyball playoffs.
Marshfield came out of the game with a win against Junction City. Head volleyball coach Tammie Montiel said the team played well.

“I thought we played really well. We had a little lapse at the beginning of the second game when we got down 8-1 and then 15-7, but we were able to fight back and I thought that during the end of that second game we maybe played as well as we have all season with picking up balls,” Montiel said.

Junior setter Shaylynn Jensen agreed with Montiel.

“I thought we all did really well. It’s just kind of crazy thinking that we’re going to state,” Jensen said.

Marshfield won the game in just three sets. They stayed ahead for most of the game except for a period of time at the beginning of the second set.

“On the court we stayed pretty mentally stable, like even in the second set when we were down, we didn’t really think about it. We stayed pretty cool even though you should kind of be freaking out,” Jensen said. “We’re pretty good at not letting it affect us. We don’t really get mad at each other about it.”

Marshfield will be traveling to the state tournament in Forest Grove this weekend to hopefully bring home a state championship.

“We face Sutherlin at 10 o’clock on Friday at the state tournament,” Montiel said. “We played them early on in the season so we know a little bit about them and beat them in three games, but I think probably each of us are different teams at this point in the season than we were in week one of our season.”

Last year, Marshfield placed fifth at the state tournament after losing in the semifinals. Montiel and Jensen both said they hope to place higher this year.

“Our hopes are to take home a state title,” Jensen said. “We’re going to take it one game at a time.”
