Inspired by the national “Plant-a-Row for the Hungry” campaign, the Oregon Coast Community Action has started its own fresh produce pantry for local families in need.

The goal of the program is to encourage gardeners to donate any extra fruits and vegetables to their local food distribution site. Anything can be donated but foods that do not spoil easily, such as green beans and potatoes, are preferred.

Donations can be brought directly to distribution sites or to the South Coast Food Share Warehouse, located at 225 La Claire in Coos Bay.

Samuel Franklin, who has grown his own produce for years, recently began growing a row in his garden to donate to the food pantry.

“Kids need healthy foods to come home to after school, and I know that not everyone can afford fresh food for their families,” Franklin said. “This is my way of helping out.
