For the fifth consecutive year, Coos Bay and North Bend combined efforts to host the OSAA 3A State Basketball Tournament.
The tournament kicked off Wednesday night with a dinner for all teams and coaches, with a three-point shooting contest following. Horizon Christian started the tournament strong, winning the contest.
Games started on Thursday afternoon and continued until the championship games on Saturday. Dayton High School took home two first place trophies, winning the tournament for the girls and the boys.
According to Athletic Director Greg Mulkey, the community was targeted seven or eight years ago and asked to host the tournament. A presentation to the OSAA board was required upon application and the Coos Bay/North Bend area was chosen.
“When we pursued it, it was a community action,” Mulkey said. “We did it to thank our community for everything they do for us.”
The tournament brought in an estimated $500,000 to the community and also helped school-wide by bringing in money to programs which volunteered to help run concessions, parking lots and ticket sales.
