Doug Miles Returns as Varsity Basketball Coach

Miles has 14 playoff wins, is a two time state coach of the year, three time league coach of the year and has two state championships at Dayton High School.

Miles has 14 playoff wins, is a two time state coach of the year, three time league coach of the year and has two state championships at Dayton High School.

Doug Miles is back. Returning to the court for the 2013-2014 season, Miles brings valuable experience to the boys basketball team. Miles was the head coach of the boys team from 2003 to 2008 and is returning to the helm after previous coach Jesse Ainsworth stepped down.

As a coach, Miles has had a lot of success. At Dayton High School he won two state championships and was a two time Oregon State Coach of the Year. Miles is known for having teams who battle for a playoff spot at the end of the season and said this year will be no different.

“We have a group of kids that are willing to work hard every day, and they all want to win,” Miles said.

Along with coaching basketball, Miles was a health and physical education teacher for 13 years at various schools, and for the last seven years, he has been a counselor at MHS.

Miles played prep basketball at Myrtle Point High, and his team won the league championship all four years he was there.  While he did not play basketball in college, his love for the game did not go away.

“I had a lot of small college opportunities, but I wanted to go to OSU,” Miles said. “I tried to walk on but they had a point guard by the name of Gary Payton.”

According to Miles, his team has a great opportunity to be a contender for the Far West League championship, but knows it will not come easy with the competition in the league.

“Our players are going to work really hard and people might not be expecting much from us,” Miles said.  “So we have a perfect opportunity to take some people by surprise by being in the running.”Miles’ players said he will bring success to the boys basketball team. According to Senior Juan Caballero, it will be a different style of basketball than the team is used to playing.

“It will be a smarter more strategic type of play, unlike the physical more brute force type of play, and I think it will benefit the team greatly,” Caballero said.

Junior Hunter Olson said Miles’ knowledge of the game will help the team be successful and make everyone become better players.

“He knows a lot about the game, and that will help all of us grow and become the best basketball players we can be,” Olson said.

Caballero said Miles also makes his players feel as if they are an important aspect of the team.

“His style in coaching is going to benefit the team, because he is patient with us and knows we will make mistakes,” Caballero said.  “He finds and uses the strengths of his players to make a contribution to the team.”
