The Marshfield boys cross country team competed in the OSAA State Championships at Lane Community College on Nov. 5. The conditions for running were not ideal due to the rain and cold, but the Pirates competed hard and finished ninth place as a team.

The Summit Storm from Bend won the outright 5A title, ousting Hermiston with 44 points to the Bulldogs’ 52 points in team scoring.

Marshfield coach Doug Landrum was happy the team placed higher than last year.

“We improved on our finish from last year so that is a positive,” Landrum said.

Although the team did improve, senior captain Eddie Rodriguez was a little disappointed as he had hoped for a top five finish.

“We had high expectations and it didn’t turn out quite how we wanted, but we all had a positive attitude and it was good experience,” Rodriguez said.

Junior Connor Devereux was the top Marshfield finisher, placing 19th, followed by seniors Zach Hammond, Sergio Marroquin and Rodriguez. Freshman Dakota Pittullo rounded out the scoring for the Pirates, while freshman Colby Gillett and sophomore Will Gagnon finished sixth and seventh on the team respectively.

“The Pirate men competed hard and finished the season on a positive note,” Landrum said.
