The month of March is dedicated to the annual commemoration of women’s history. This occasion honors and celebrates the remarkable contributions and accomplishments of women throughout history. It spans the entire month, raising awareness about the often underestimated achievements of women in politics, science, arts, and more. It provides a valuable opportunity to spotlight the significant role women have played in shaping society and advocate for gender equality. Women’s History Month serves as a reminder of progress in women’s rights and the ongoing efforts for complete gender parity.
Samantha Beckett, an 8th grade teacher at Marshfield Junior High School,
believes that women will have more and more doors opened to them.
“Still I am concerned that we have taken some steps backward with regards to women’s rights,” said Beckett.
Women’s rights have played a significant role in social and political movements. From the suffrage movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to the ongoing fight for reproductive rights and gender equality, women have continuously advocated for their rights and challenged societal norms. These efforts have led to important legal and social changes, including the right to vote, access to education and employment opportunities, and the recognition of reproductive rights.
However, despite these advancements, gender inequalities and discrimination persist in various forms, underscoring the ongoing need for continued advocacy and activism to ensure full and equal rights for women. Someone who is greatly influential to Beckett is Jessica Engelke.
“She is a go-getter, with great organizational and leadership skills,” she said. “But again, we can look about anywhere and find women making positive waves in their own sphere of influence like Jessica.”
Situations like these support that women have a big impact on other women. They shape each other’s beliefs, values, and goals. Through shared experiences and role models, women inspire and empower each other to overcome obstacles and achieve success. Successful women serve as role models, showing others what’s possible and encouraging them to dream big. Women also support and encourage each other, creating a sense of community and empowerment.
Chelsey Seedborg, a science teacher at Marshfield High School, believes her mom is the most influential woman in her life.
“She was a loving mother and grandmother, and an amazing teacher and counselor,” said Seedborg.
Studies show that mothers have a significant influence on their daughters. They provide emotional support, teach life skills, and instill important values such as empathy, resilience, and independence. As daughters grow older, they often look to their mothers as role models and seek their advice and guidance on various aspects of life, including relationships, career choices, and personal growth. The influence of mothers on older daughters is profound and can have a lasting impact on their lives. But it doesn’t always have to be a mother who influences your well-being.
“Anyone in pop culture has the ability to influence young people since that’s what they pay attention to,” Seedborg said. “Some even have the status of ‘influencer.’ Young people have to be careful about who they watch and think about what’s important.”
Shauna Haley, Early Head Start Home-Based Manager, believes that women face many challenges but something that is important to her is the ability to make choices for themselves.
“Unfortunately, we have many challenges to face, but currently, I believe a woman’s right to make decisions that are best for herself is extremely important,” she said. “We still live in a country where the statistics aren’t positive in a woman’s favor when it comes to equality or equity.”
The importance of a woman’s right to make decisions that are in her best interest cannot be overstated. Sadly, the statistics concerning gender equality and equity in our country are not encouraging. It is imperative that we recognize and tackle these challenges with the respect and mindset deserved.
Throughout history, the issue of women’s rights has played a significant role in social and political movements. Women have consistently advocated for their rights and challenged societal norms just like what Shauna Haley expressed. These efforts have resulted in important legal and social changes, including the right to vote, access to education and employment opportunities, and the recognition of reproductive rights. However, despite these advancements, gender inequalities and discrimination persist in various forms, highlighting the ongoing need for continued advocacy and activism to ensure full and equal rights for women.
