During Thanksgiving everyone thinks about their favorite dish. Thanksgiving is a day to appreciate family and the things you have, so why not have your favorite food and dessert on that day, as well? A lot of families have their own special and unique dishes that other families don’t traditionally have. Many people have traditions like getting the family all together to catch up and cook their favorite dishes. Other families go to church and have their dinner later at night. Sometimes, people drive or fly long distances to be with their family to celebrate their thankfulness.
“I would say the mashed potatoes are my favorite, and the turkey is also good,” said Marshfield High School freshman Yesica Denova.
Not all families have Thanksgiving food traditions, such as having turkey, dressing, and pie. Some families have different food each Thanksgiving. They could either be trying new dishes, or switching up the menu completely.
“We don’t really have all the traditional food,” Denova said. “What we have is carne, but mostly what I look forward to is the mashed potatoes and at the same time the carnitas.”
Thanksgiving isn’t all about the food though. Families have long standing traditions, such as playing board games, sports, practicing thankfulness, watching football, or viewing the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Brave shoppers venture out into the holiday madness to take advantage of Black Friday sales.
According to a survey of MHS PAT classes, the most common favorite traditional Thanksgiving foods at MHS include turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and any pie–with several students highlighting pumpkin as their favorite dessert.
