Quarterback Cam Newton and the imposing 17-2 Carolina Panthers fell to the Super Bowl 50 champions, the Denver Broncos.
MVP linebacker Von Miller made enough big plays for the Broncos to end with a 24-10 win at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA. Miller had six tackles, two and a half sacks, two forced fumbles and a pass defended.
Quarterback Peyton Manning has not yet decided if he will finish off his career at age 39 after leading the Broncos to their third NFL title.
Manning opened the game with an 18-yard completion to tight end Owen Daniels, followed by a 34-yard field goal by kicker Brandon McManus, resulting in the first points of the game.
At the end of the first quarter Denver led 10-0, after defensive tackle Malik Jackson scored from a recovered fumble forced by Miller.
As Carolina was falling behind, Newton led the Panthers to a 73-yard drive resulting with a one-yard diving touchdown by running back Jonathan Stewart.
The Broncos added to their lead with a 33-yard field goal by McManus with Denver still leading 13-7 going in to half time.
Manning completed 13 of 23 passes for 141 yards against Carolina.
After a series of field goals by McManus and Carolina kicker Graham Gano, Denver led 16-10.
The game finished with a two-yard touchdown from Bronco running back C.J. Anderson, followed by a two-point conversion to reciever Bennie Fowler from Manning resulting in a Bronco victory 24-10.
