Built upon a strong start to the season, the Marshfield volleyball team has accumulated an 8-1 record through preseason. With league play opening next Tuesday against rival Siuslaw, the Pirates will be in contention for another league title.
On Tuesday night the girls swept local teams Reedsport and Myrtle Point, which were the latest of dominating victories. The team has only lost two matches through nine games while taking the other 22 matches they have played. The lone loss came at the hands of Crater, a 6A school. Senior captain Abby Clough was pleased with how her team has performed.
“We’ve started out really well, a lot better than in previous years,” Clough said.
Entering league play, the Pirates hold the best record among teams in the Far West league. They also possess the title as the number 4 ranked team in the 4A classification according to osaa.com. According to head coach Tammie Montiel, the early success has been a team effort.
“There isn’t one person that stands out,” Montiel said. “Everyone is doing their job which makes us a better team.”
Unfazed by early success, Clough said the team is not done refining.
“I think our team is going to keep improving over the season,” Clough said. “Each game makes us a lot better, even when we don’t play well.”
